“Shadows of Banda”, 2024 reimagines the traditional Indonesian shadow play, Wayang Kulit, infusing it with modern sensibilities while honoring its cultural roots. Drawing on the tragic history of the Bandanese massacre by the Dutch, this work juxtaposes the innocence of childhood wonder with the brutality of history, prompting reflection and empathy. Employing traditional puppetry techniques alongside modern multimedia elements, the project aims to evoke a sense of wonder and provoke thoughtful engagement with the complexities of history, culture, and resilience. By inviting audiences into a dialogue with the past, “Shadows of Banda” pays homage to a rich cultural tradition while offering a unique and immersive experience. Audiences witnessed a live performance, supplemented by pre-recorded versions of the performance during non-live showings.

My primary aim is to evoke the perspective of my younger self, enraptured by the magic of this shadow play. Recreating this perspective holds particular significance in light of the historical events surrounding the massacre of the Bandanese people by the Dutch; of which my play is based on. By inviting the audience to witness the shadow play through the lens of innocence and wonder, I intend to create a juxtaposition to the brutality and tragedy of the past.

Through this juxtaposition, I seek to provoke reflection and empathy, prompting viewers to confront the complexities of history while also celebrating the resilience of culture and tradition. In representing this perspective, I intend to not only honour the cultural heritage of Wayang Kulit but also to spread awareness of the atrocities that have happened.

The performances will be held in collaboration with Cleo Dumas and her project of the tent space, creating a unique and immersive experience that invites audiences to engage with the story in a meaningful way. This collaboration of space enhances the storytelling, allowing for a more intimate and interactive experience for the audience.
